UN Tourism at the Forefront of Ecotourism Progress

Ecotourism is a type of tourism to ascertain responsible traveling in order to promote sustainability and conserve the environment. The United Nation Tourism (previously known as UNWTO until 2023) is responsible for providing guidance and research for its Member States in order to develop their economic growth. To this day, UN Tourism plays its role in promoting the benefits of ecotourism for both the people and the planet and encourages businesses to start investing in local communities to benefits both parties.

Embrace Adventure, Seize Opportunity!

Like every other sector, it is undeniable that tourism also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. According to UN Tourism in 2019, transport-related emissions play a huge role in contributing to global CO2 emission and are forecasted to grow as much as 45% from 2016 to 2030. To prevent this, through the Glasgow Declaration Implementation Report on 2023, UN Tourism established 5 pathways to climate plans: measure, decarbonize, regenerate, collaborate, finance and publish the progress annually.  

UN Tourism Initiatives: Social Media Campaign

One of the most vital roles of UN Tourism is to promote responsible and widely accessible tourism. One of the steps taken is by spreading this via social media campaigns on World Tourism Day on September 27th every year. Other than social media campaigns, UN Tourism also takes a modern approach in order to adapt with ongoing trends. With the use of digital marketing, UN Tourism partnered up with Facebook and Instagram in order to guide global destinations to reach new audiences and produce a ‘Tourism Recovery Playbook’ in an attempt to show safe and responsible travel to tourists. 

Global Collaboration Igniting Ecotourism Promotion

Currently, UN Tourism has over 500 companies as their affiliate members, consisting of tourism associations, private sector, educational and research institutions, and nonprofit organizations. In June 2023, a travel company from Indonesia known as Traveloka, joined as UN Tourism affiliate member as reported from the UN Tourism Conference in Phnom Penh. In an attempt to actively carry out various innovations while intensifying advocacy for responsible and sustainable tourism, Traveloka will also be taking part in various High Level International Discussion Forums. 

Kartong Tesito Camp, A Successful Ecotourism Project

In 2016, the Kartong Ecotourism Project was conducted in order to introduce new developed and sustainable tourism to the local communities, and give them employment opportunities. These activities consist of Gambian culinary classes and degradable waste reduction training programs.
