Youth as agents of change, that’s the phrase we often hear. If we look back at the struggle of the youth, especially at the event of Sumpah Pemuda, that phrase is indeed true. The struggle for Indonesian independence which previously prioritized regional fanaticism then slowly changed to become more nationalism.

History of Sumpah Pemuda

The first Kongres Pemuda held in 1926 has not come up with many ideas. After that, Perhimpunan Pelajar-Pelajar Indonesia (PPPI) was formed, that’s a youth organization consisting of all students from all over Indonesia. Based on the PPPI’s initiative, the Second Kongres Pemuda was held on October 27-28, 1928. The congress was held in three different buildings and was divided into three meetings. The second Kongres Pemuda was attended by various participants, namely Perhimpunan Pelajar-Pelajar Indonesia (PPPI), Jong Java, Jong Islamienten Bond, Jong Sumatranen Bond, Jong Celebes, Jong Bataks Bond, Pemuda Indonesia, Jong Ambon, and others. The result of the Second Kongres Pemuda is what we know as Sumpah Pemuda.

Reporting from the page, the first meeting was held on October 27, 1928, at Katholieke Jongenlingen Bond Building (KJB). Soegondo as the leader of the congress hoped the congress can raise the spirit of youth. Then on that occasion, Moehammad Jamin discussed the relationship of unity with youth and five factors that can strengthen unity, namely history, language, customary law, education, and willingness. The second meeting was on October 28, 1928 at the Oost-Java Bioscoop Building. Poernomowoelan and Sarmidi Mangoensarkoro as speakers on the occasion discussed about education. The third meeting was held at the Indonesische Clubhuis Kramat Building. As a speaker, Soenario conveyed the importance of nationalism and democracy, while Ramelan discussed the scouting movement that cannot be separated from the national movement. The formulation of the results of the congress was announced at the close of the congress and then by the youth present, the formula was pronounced as the Sumpah Setia, which reads :

Theme of Sumpah Pemuda 2021 and The Role of Youth in This Current Condition

It has been almost two years since the Covid-19 pandemic hit Indonesia and even the world. As time goes on, of course, many changes and differences occur, not least on the commemoration of Sumpah Pemuda in 2021. The Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) has inaugurated the big theme of the 93rd Sumpah Pemuda in 2021 on the official website of the, namely Unite, Rise, and Grow.

Unite. This means that Indonesian youth have a spirit of unity in the diversity of the Indonesian nation.

Rise. This means Indonesian youth as the spirit of youth participation to rise up against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Grow. Meaningful as an effort to realize economic growth with the entrepreneurial spirit of youth.

The future of this nation is in the hands of youth as the next generation of the nation. The current covid-19 pandemic is certainly a challenge for many people, not least for the youth. Youth act as agents of change. If we reflect on the contents of Sumpah Pemuda, we can understand that the youth unite to fight the invaders, fighting ignorance, poverty, and backwardness. However, in the current conditions youth acts to fight the covid-19 pandemic, fighting economic instability, and becoming the mover agent of the nation’s economy. Therefore, youth assistance is needed to restore Indonesia’s economy, because youth are identified with creativity, revolutionary, and move quickly.

Technological advances today are also inseparable from the lives of the younger generation. With technology, we as young people can develop various ideas that can lead to a better life. In addition, the spirit of collaboration between youth is also needed to manage various life challenges in the future by being able to think creatively to generate new opportunities and new creations.
